Bio

Christine Webster was born in Karlsruhe, Germany. She lives and works in France. She creates sounds and experimental music for different kind of media and dimensions.

Initially trained as a graphic designer she studied electroacoustic music with Jean Schwartz in the late eighties. She worked also as a post-production sound engineer for foreign tv program adaptations, documentaries and animation series.

Besides that, she produces her own music and has done sound design for independent film production like Terminal Images, Lardux Films, but also for mainstream production like Folimages, Gédéon, Canal+, Les Productions de l’Èrable or Ubisoft. She worked with France Musique, was commissioned on multiples residencies for Tapage Nocturne, as well as on CD audio books projects for Ocora – Radio France including collaborations with the Orchestre de Radio France.

In 2006 she discovered the potential of virtual reality and social 3D platform like Second Life. In 2008 she began to create her own 3D spatialized electroacoustic compositions, virtual sound installation and sonifications for VR simulations.

In October 2013, Christine Webster joined the Ensad-LAB Spatial Media research lab in Paris, leading her flagship VR project, Empty Room : an electroacoustic composition spatialized in VR, using Object-Based Audio, High Order Ambisonic and Binaural technologies. This project leads in 2016 to a thesis she defended in November 2022 at Université de Paris 8.

Today, in addition of experimental music production and research, she teaches sound design and electroacoustic music.

Christine Webster was also well known in France as a writer, she reviewed during ten years about innovative hardware and software for KR-HomeStudio and MCD Digitalarti.

In 2015 she co-founded with composer Gael Segalen, Polyphones a French experimental women composer network and three years later, OWO the Open Woman Orchestra.

Christine Webster was nominated several times on short films nominees list,  in France for the Lutin du Court Métrage in Paris and in the US on the Oscar nominees short list 2011 for :

The  film was listed by the Development at the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts of Philadelphia among the 250 best short films in animation since 1895.
